Ingredients
Apple filling
- 6 medium apples about 2 pounds; peeled, cored, and sliced 1/4 inch thick
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
Oat crumble
- 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar packed
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter cold and cut into small cubes
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
Instructions
Method
- Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly butter a 9-inch square or similar 2-quart baking dish.
- Toss the sliced apples with the brown sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, and salt. Spread evenly in the prepared dish.
- Combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Rub in the cold butter until the mixture contains both sandy crumbs and small pebbly clusters.
- Scatter the crumble loosely over the apples without pressing. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until the juices bubble around the edges and the topping is golden.
- Cool for at least 15 minutes before serving so the fruit juices can settle.
