Ingredients

Classic margarita
  • 2 ounces blanco tequila 100% agave
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 3/4 ounce orange liqueur such as Cointreau or triple sec
  • 1/4 ounce agave syrup optional, to taste
  • kosher salt for a half rim
  • ice for shaking and serving
  • 1 lime wedge for the rim and garnish

Equipment

  • 1 cocktail shaker
  • 1 jigger
  • 1 rocks or coupe glass

Instructions

Method
  1. Fill the serving glass with ice or place a coupe in the freezer while you mix the drink.
  2. Run the lime wedge around half the rim, then dip that side lightly in kosher salt. A half rim lets each sip be salty or clean.
  3. Add the tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and optional agave to a shaker filled with ice. Shake hard for 12 to 15 seconds, until the tin feels very cold.
  4. Discard the ice from the glass and add fresh ice, or leave the chilled coupe empty. Strain in the margarita and garnish with the lime wedge. Taste before adding more sweetener.

Notes

  • Fresh lime matters here; bottled juice tends to taste flatter and more bitter.
  • For a zero-proof version, use a nonalcoholic agave spirit and alcohol-free orange aperitif, then adjust sweetness to taste.
  • This cocktail can contain more alcohol than one U.S. standard drink. Serve responsibly.
  • Nutrition is an estimate and excludes the variable salt rim.
