Ingredients
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil 13.5 g
- 1 medium onion diced, about 150 g
- 1 large red bell pepper diced, about 160 g
- 600 g 93% lean ground turkey
- 3 cloves garlic minced, about 9 g
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste 30 g
- 2 tablespoons mild American-style chili powder blend about 12 g; not cayenne or pure hot chile
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin 4 g
- 800 g canned chopped tomatoes with juice
- 500 g cooked kidney beans about 3 cups, drained and rinsed if canned
- 1 cup unsalted chicken broth 240 ml
- 3 g fine salt about 1/2 teaspoon; adjust to chili blend
Equipment
- 1 Large Dutch oven or saucepan
- 1 wooden spoon
- 1 Instant-read thermometer
Instructions
Prepare and cook
- Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper; cook 5–6 minutes, stirring, until beginning to soften.
- Add the turkey and break it into small crumbles. Cook 6–8 minutes, stirring, until no raw-looking pieces remain. Add garlic, tomato paste, chili blend and cumin; stir for 45 seconds without letting the spices burn.
- Add tomatoes with their juice, drained cooked beans, broth and salt. Stir well, scraping the bottom, and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Simmer uncovered for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chili reaches the thickness you like and the turkey reaches 165°F (74°C). Add small splashes of water if necessary, or simmer a little longer to thicken.
- Taste before adding extra salt, since chili blends vary. Divide into six bowls. Optional cheese, yogurt, cilantro, chips or hot sauce are not included in the nutrition estimate.

Notes
Video reference: Natashas Kitchen, published 2025-02-07. The demonstration uses several bean varieties, corn and jalapeño. This written version uses kidney beans and bell pepper; both brown the turkey before simmering with tomatoes and beans.
Use fully cooked kidney beans, not dried beans. American chili powder is a seasoning blend; pure hot chile powder is not a direct substitute.
Nutrition is estimated from ANSES Ciqual 2025 for beans and produce, Butterball 93/7 turkey, Swanson unsalted broth and the McCormick Choice chili-powder manufacturer specification. The spice specification is a product approximation, not a value for every chili blend; sodium can vary substantially. Below-threshold values use half the threshold. Toppings and sides are excluded.
Illustrative cost assumptions, not live prices: turkey $6, beans $1.60, tomatoes/paste $2, onion/pepper/garlic $1.50, broth $0.50, oil/spices $1 = $12.60.
Refrigerate in shallow containers promptly, use within 3–4 days and reheat to 165°F (74°C).
