- 2 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters approximately 2.5 ml; dash sizes vary
- 1 cocktail cherry drained, about 5 g
- ice cubes enough to fill the mixing glass generously
Equipment
- 1 mixing glass or sturdy jug
- 1 jigger or small measuring cup
- 1 long spoon
- 1 cocktail strainer
- 1 coupe or small cocktail glass
Instructions
Mix and serve
- Fill a coupe or small cocktail glass with ice and water while you prepare the drink.
- Measure the rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters into a mixing glass or sturdy jug. Add plenty of solid ice cubes.
- Stir smoothly around the inside of the mixing glass for about 25–35 seconds, until thoroughly chilled. Timing varies with the ice and starting temperatures; do not shake.

Notes
Video: Anders Erickson demonstrates the same 2:1 rye-and-sweet-vermouth method. His version uses 100-proof rye and Cocchi; this base estimate uses 80-proof whiskey and Martini Rosso, so strength and flavor differ. A bourbon substitution changes the flavor. Vermouth may contain sulfites; check bottle labels. Refrigerate opened vermouth and follow its label directions.
Nutrition is an approximate ingredient-sum estimate for one cocktail, including a drained 5 g cherry. Calculation uses USDA SR Legacy 80-proof distilled spirits (55.6 g per 2 US fl oz) and drained maraschino cherries, the Martini Rosso electronic label (139 kcal and 14.3 g carbohydrate/sugar per 100 ml), and a rounded 5 kcal allowance for approximately 2.5 ml aromatic bitters from available product-label listings. Rounded estimate: 185 kcal, 6.4 g carbohydrate and 6.2 g sugar. Bitters measures, whiskey proof, vermouth brand and cherry syrup alter values; micronutrients and other insufficiently supported totals are omitted. One serving contains more than one U.S. standard drink. Intended for adults of legal drinking age; do not drive after drinking.
